People counting is simply the measurement of the visitor traffic that flows into and around retail stores, shopping malls, sporting venues or wherever potential customers may be found. Counting visitor traffic will help maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of employees, floor area and sales potential of a business.

Vital Equipment Solutions primarily uses infrared technology to gather valuable customer information. The unit has an optical lens system and electronic circuits to emit a narrow beam of pulsed light from an infrared light emitting diode. The reflector uses a principle where the light beam is reflected directly back at its source and avoids the requirement for precision alignment.

As a person walks through the beam, some of the light is absorbed or reflected. Since only a very small amount of this optical energy finds its way back to the detector, the beam is momentarily interrupted and a counter is incremented. Light modulation techniques ensure that the counting is more reliable and not affected by infrared light emitted from other sources.
